Contra Costa County is home to 19 cities and numerous unincorporated communities. The County was established in 1850. The name signifies “opposite coast,” because of its situation opposite San Francisco, in an easterly direction, on San Francisco Bay.

Contra Costa County is broadly divided into three sub-areas:

• West County
• Central County
• East County

The East Bay is the eastern region of the San Francisco Bay Area, which comprises Alameda and Contra Costa counties.

The East Bay includes numerous communities including Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda, El Cerrito, Emeryville, Albany, Lafayette/Moraga/Orinda often referred to as Lamorinda.

The East Bay also includes the Tri-Valley Areas of  Livermore, Pleasanton, Dublin, San Ramon  and Danville.
